Some Random Thoughts on "Turning Red"

So Friday was the day that "Turning Red" came out on Disney+ (and in some very limited theaters). You may have heard about some early reviews complaining about it - mainly with some pretty racist overtones. Which was NOT fair at all - yes, it's directly the story of a Chinese-Canadian girl, Meilin Lee and a very specific curse the women in her family have, but on a deeper level it's about anyone who's gone through finding themselves as someone different to who they always thought they were. Seriously - who didn't have an awkward time in puberty when suddenly they've got hair where they didn't, their body is changing in ways they didn't get, they smell different than they used to. Who didn't have that rebelling against what your parents' expectations of you were, branching out from the person you'd always been as a child to find yourself?  I know I definitely did! Oh, I may not have rebelled as drastically as some did, but I did in my o...

Disneyland Trip!!!!!

Image
I know it's been a while - best of intentions and all that. BUT!   Last week I spent my February Break week at Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure!! I plan all my trips with the help of  Jacki York who is with  MEI Travel and Mouse Fan Travel and is absolutely amazing!! I had technically been to Disneyland in September 2011 for the Half Marathon, but so much of that weekend was the expo and race and other touring - plus Disney's California Adventure was VERY different with Carsland only being built and since Disney had only owned Marvel for not quite 2 years, I doubt Avengers Campus was even Blue Sky at that time. So it felt like a first visit in so many ways. Getting to the trip took some turns. I'd initially started planning this at the beginning of the school year - or maybe even over the summer - then I got "cruise-sick" and changed my break plans to a Marvel Day at Sea cruise. I got nervous about testing positive at the port (Disney Cruise Line...

You can do everything right...

...and still. In spite of being double vaxxed and boosted (all Moderna), wearing a mask any time I'm outside of my apartment, washing and sanitizing, and even double masking with a KN95 along with my regular Disney mask on the plane on Wednesday, I tested positive yesterday. I honestly thought it was just a cold - I've felt exactly the same multiple times over the past 2 years and tested negative, so when I got in line for a "back to school" test, I fully expected it to be negative. But nope. There it was in black and white when I got up to use the restroom last night and checked my phone. POSITIVE. I mostly feel ok - no fever, no sore throat...just stuffed up nose and ears and a bit of a cough. And I'm tired. Of course as a teacher working through this tired is pretty regular for me, so... Like I said, I was NOT expecting it. So I guess that goes to show really do not assume that cold-like symptoms are "just a cold" and avoid getting a test. If I su...

Things That Happened...Things To Come

I'm not going to do the standard reflection on goals and such from 2021 and then goal setting for 2022 post...those never seem to turn out well for me. And it seems really ambitious for a re-named and hopefully revamped little blog of my musings. I figure the less pressure I put on this the better it might turn out. So... I'm just going to go over some things that happened in 2021 and some things I'm looking forward to in 2022... 2021 brought much of the same...teaching in person in a weird environment with occasional 10-day forrays into remote learning, summer vacation which was mainly just a break from school, going back into the classroom with...questionable ways of keeping us there. But there were some highlights. January - I joined a new church, one that feels like it fits me much better. It's not perfect - I don't think there is such a thing - but it's a place where I feel at home to grow. February - I took time over Winter Break and went to Disney Wo...
